YouTube is one of the top video hosting content out there and it offers a treasure trove of free educational content to use to enrich your lessons and engage students.
However, the distractions on YouTube—like recommended videos, ads, comments, and autoplay—can easily derail students’ focus. This is where Unhook comes in as a powerful solution to transform how you use YouTube in your classroom.
Basically, when you use Unhook, you will be to:
Unhook enables you to hide unrelated content such as recommended videos, comments, live chat, and trending sections. This will force students to engage only with the educational material you’ve selected.

ToolsWhen it comes to creating charts and diagrams to represent stats and data, most of us are often intimidated by the thought that it requires sophisticated tools and advanced technology and in sometimes graphic design knowledge.
Well, that used to be the case! Now a wide variety of EdTech tools make it super easy for anyone including those with the minimum design knowledge (like me) to create beautiful and professionally designed charts and graphic representations.
Several AI assistants currently support the creation of visual representations. Simply craft a detailed prompt with your stats and ask the bot to provide a visual representation. Or, better yet upload a CSV file and let the AI bot extract your data and help you design your chart. However, in today’s post, I am introducing you this simple and easy tool in Canva which allows you create beautiful charts.
As you all know, since its introduction a few years ago, Canva has become the mecca of accessible design tools, empowering educators, students, and professionals to create visually appealing content without needing advanced design skills. Canva’s intuitive interface, drag-and-drop features, and a massive library of templates have transformed how we approach design.
Given the educational value of this platform, I deemed it important to devote a whole section here in Educators Technology covering the different features Canva provides. And no, I am not affiliated in any shape or form with Canva. I simply recognize its potential as an invaluable tool for educators.
To start creating your charts on Canva, go ahead and open a document in Canva Doc. Once there click on the + icon or type in / (slash) and select the type of chart you want to create. As of writing these lines, Canva supports three types of charts:
Pie chart: Good for showing proportions and percentages, making it ideal for visualizing parts of a whole, such as survey results or demographic data.
Bar chart: Best for comparing quantities across categories, like grades by subject, class participation, or resource usage.
Line Chart: Perfect for displaying trends over time, such as student progress, attendance patterns, or performance metrics.
Simply select the chart type you are interested in and fill in your data using the table on the left hand side. There are two ways to provide your data: you can either upload a file with your data and let Canva extract and use the data to create a visual representation for you. Files supported for upload include: CSV, TSV, and XLSX. You can also use the Google Sheets app in Canva to directly import your Sheets file into Canva Doc.
The second way is to type in your data manually. This can be cumbersome especially if you have too much data to input, but it works well for smaller datasets or when making quick edits. Simply enter your values into the table provided, and Canva will automatically update the chart to reflect your data.
Once your chart is ready, you can customize it further. For instance, you can change the colors, fonts, labels, and even add animations if you’re creating a presentation. In fact, this flexibility and easy of use is one of Canva’s strengths over other design tools.
In few minutes, you will be able to effortlessly generate a professionally designed chart that you can directly include in your documents or presentations.
Here is a video tutorial I recorded explaining how to use Canva to create beautiful charts:
When it comes to using charts in your teaching, the sky is the limit. There are various ways to include them in your instructional practice. For instance, you can use Canva chart generator to easily create materials to enhance your lesson plans. Instead of providing dry data, use graphic charts to bring life to your data and to increase students engagement and motivation.
You can also use it to visually represent data to boost students’ understanding. Research has proven time and again that visuals tend to enhance memory retention and boost comprehension. For example, you can design charts to display students progress, illustrate complex concepts, or compare historical events, scientific phenomena, or literary themes.
Another way to use charts in your teaching is by creating charts that break down survey results, poll outcomes, or class performance metrics. You can even use them to represent steps in a process, like the scientific method or the writing process.

As I mentioned earlier, visuals like charts are important assets to use in your teaching. They boost students engagement and enhance their understanding by making abstract data more concrete and relatable for students which helps them see patterns, relationships, and trends more clearly. Canva is good option to try to out to help create charts easily and quickly. Go ahead and give it a try and share with us your feedback.

Techer resourcesCritical thinking has always been one of the key skills not only in learning but in life in general. With the advent of artificial intelligence and the proliferation of all kinds of information online, critical thinking has become a pressing skill.
Over the years, I have shared a wide range of resources to help teachers and parents develop this skill among their kids and students. From TED talks discussing the intricacies of critical thinking to activities and digital tools, our critical thinking section here in Educators Technology is full of ready made resources to use in your class.
In today’s post, I am sharing this collection of posters I have been working on for the last few weeks. I used Canva Pro to design these visuals. The purpose is to provide you with visual aids to use with your students in your class. The posters cover various topics related to critical thinking more specifically:
– The Critical Thinking Circle (4 posters) – A visual breakdown of the essential steps in the critical thinking process.
– Question and Imagine: The Catalyst of Creativity (2 posters) – Encourage students to ask questions and let their imagination soar.

– Decide & Reflect: Completing the Critical Thinking Cycle (2 posters) – Guide students through decision-making and reflection.
– Characteristics of Critical Thinkers (2 posters) – Showcase the traits of strong critical thinkers.
– Critical Thinking Questions (1 poster) – A quick reference for sparking meaningful discussion.
– Boost Your Critical Thinking: Quick Reminders for Every Day (2 posters) – Practical tips to keep critical thinking at the forefront.
– Critical Thinking Skills Examples (2 posters) – Real-world examples to illustrate critical thinking in action.
– Problem-Solving in Action (2 posters) – Encourage strategic thinking through problem-solving activities.
– THINK Before You Speak (10 posters) – A popular visual guide to help students pause and think critically before responding.
These posters are available for a discounted fee and come in different formats including PDF, PNG, and editable Canva formats. For those of you who want to further edit the posters, they can use the embeded link in the file. However, keep in mind that I used several materials that are only available to Canva Pro users. So unless you are a premium user you will not be able to customize or use those items.
I hope you will find the insights and visual content in those posters helpful. I made the posters available for purchase through various stores including our Educators Technology Shop, Teachers Pay Teachers, or our shop in Gumroad.

PedagogyIn today’s post, I am sharing a collection of important tips to help you take care of yourself. Teaching, as we all know, is a demanding and often stressful profession, making it all the more important to prioritize your well-being. After consulting several trusted sources, I’ve gathered these practical and effective strategies to help you manage stress, boost your energy, and maintain balance in your personal and professional life.
Here are 10 importance self-care tips for teachers:
You can only do so much and if you do not learn how to set clear boundaries you will eventually burnout. In his best selling book When the Body Says No, doctor Gabor Maté explains how stress and burnout can contribute to the emergence of chronic diseases including breast cancer, Alzheimer, prostate cancer, multiple sclerosis and several others. By setting boundaries, saying no when necessary, and taking time for self-care, you protect yourself from the damaging effects of prolonged stress and create space for a healthier, more balanced life.
Taking breaks is important for your overall well-being. A break is any cessation of activity in which your brain takes rest from an ongoing activity. Science has proved that taking frequent breaks can have major positive outcomes including boosting our productivity, reducing stress, enhance our creating thinking, improve our physical health. Even a break as short as 60 seconds can do wonders. During your breaks do some breathing exercises, meditate, or simply relax.
In his book Why We Sleep, author Matthew Walker (director of the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley) emphasized the importance of sleep in our life and argues that sleep loss can over time instigate the onset of severe illnesses including dementia. Walker further added that adults around the age of 40 who sleep 6 hours or less have higher chances of undergoing a heart attack or stroke in their lifetime. A minimum of 7 hours of sleep each night is recommended for healthy adults while young children require even more sleep hours to support their growth and development. So make you’re getting enough rest each night. Good sleep is crucial for maintaining energy, health and focus.
It goes without saying that regular physical activity, whether it’s a walk or yoga, is essential for our wellbeing. can help reduce stress and improve your mood. 30 minutes of daily physical activity is recommended this can be a walk in the park, a jog, biking, or any other activity where your whole body is engaged. For extra fitness and health benefits you can incorporate some vigorous exercises once or twice a week. For those of you who sit for prolonged period of time make sure you set your alarm to remind you to take physical activity breaks each hour or two. This ensures that you don’t develop dead butt syndrome or what is known as ‘gluteal amnesia‘.
As social beings, we thrive in communal connections and rely on relationships to provide us with emotional support, a sense of belonging, and shared experiences that enrich our lives. Research has proved that social connections with colleagues in the workplace can have several benefits including increasing job satisfaction, enhancing productivity, and boosting health and well-being. So make sure to connect with you colleagues and Share how you’re feeling with those you trust. You’re not alone, and mutual support can lighten the load.
In a digitally connected world, constant connectivity becomes our new ‘normal’. We become so accustomed to instant communication and information that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or distracted, making it harder to disconnect and focus on the present moment. The growing concerns over this trend of constant connectivity has resulted in the emergence of a wide variety of works that emphasize the importance of unplugging and digital detox.
There is also a worldwide movement now advocating for time off digital devices. For instance, the Digital Detox organization organizes unplugging retreats each year at Camp Grounded where adults are encouraged to ‘disconnect and reconnect’. So if you spend so much time being connected online try to limit the time spent on social media or checking emails. Create moments of stillness and mindfulness throughout your day.
Together with regular physical activity, proper nutrition is essential for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. A balanced diet, as you probabaly know, provides your body with the necessary nutrients to function optimally which in turn enhances your stamina, focus, and mood throughout the day. Equally importance is staying hydrated all day. This is crucial for maintaining energy levels, supporting cognitive function, and preventing fatigue. So make sure to combine proper nutrition with physical activity and you will not only build a strong foundation for overall health but you will also feel more energized and ready to tackle daily challenges.
Feeling and expressing gratitude every day helps shift your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant thus creating a more positive mindset. Make it a habit to take a moment at the end of each day to reflect on positive moments, no matter how small, you train your mind to notice the good amidst challenges. This practice not only reduces stress and anxiety but also promotes emotional resilience, allowing you to better cope with difficult situations. Over time, gratitude becomes a powerful tool for fostering a sense of peace and well-being.
If you feel overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to seek professional support. Mental health is just as important as physical health and taking care of it should be a priority. Seeking help from a therapist or counselor is not a sign of weakness, but a proactive step toward maintaining balance and well-being. Just as you would consult a doctor for a physical ailment, addressing mental health concerns with a professional can provide you with the tools and strategies needed to cope, heal, and thrive.
Engaging in hobbies or activities that you are passionate about allows you to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Whether it’s reading, gardening, painting, or simply spending time with loved ones, these moments of joy and relaxation help reduce stress, prevent burnout, and enhance your overall well-being.
I hope you have found these tips insightful and practical for incorporating self-care into your daily routine. As I mentioned before, taking care of your well-being is essential not only for your health but also for your ability to be the best teacher you can be. Making self-care a priority in your life will help you recharge, reduce stress, and maintain the energy needed to inspire and support your students.

PedagogyIn today’s post, I introduce you to the concept of Structured Literacy (SL). As explained by Louise Spear-Swerling (2022), SL is a comprehensive approach to reading interventions that caters to children with various reading difficulties. SL covers a broad spectrum of instructional strategies and is designed to support students with diverse reading challenges, not just those with specific types of difficulties.
SL is not limited to phonics instruction. It includes teaching foundational skills like phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling, as well as advanced literacy skills such as reading comprehension and written expression. This makes SL effective for both decoding problems and comprehension issues (Louise Spear-Swerling, 2022).
In this post, I cover the definition of Structured Literacy, highlighting what SL is and how it supports a wide range of reading challenges. I also delve into the key features of SL, explaining the components and instructional strategies that make it effective. Additionally, I provide sample SL activities that you can implement in your classroom to support your students’ literacy development.
Structured Literacy (SL) is a term used by the International Dyslexia Association to describe a collection of teaching methods and interventions designed to address various literacy challenges. SL focuses on essential literacy skills and components of oral language that are crucial for reading development and often linked to different types of reading difficulties.
Key elements of SL according to Louise Spear-Swerling (2022) include:
These components work together to build a strong foundation for reading and addressing literacy difficulties.
The importance of structured literacy is well documented in the literature (e.g., Berninger et al., 2006; Seidenberg, 2017; Spear-Swerling ; Stanovich, 2000))., Structured Literacy (SL) involves a methodical and direct approach to teaching key literacy skills. Here are some of its main features as outlined by Spear-Swerling (2022, p. 4):

PedagogyIn today’s post, I am covering a very important strategy in teaching vocabulary—the Frayer Model. This graphic organizer has transformed the way educators introduce and explore new words across various subjects and grade levels. More specifically, I delve into the definition of the Frayer Model, outline effective implementation strategies, highlight its numerous benefits, and conclude with practical examples. Whether you’re a seasoned educator or new to teaching, understanding how to leverage this tool can significantly enhance your instructional approach and improve student outcomes in vocabulary development.
Frayer model is “an instructional strategy that utilizes a graphic organizer to teach vocabulary” (Dazzeo & Rao, 2020, p. 35). Originally developed by Dorothy Frayer and her colleagues in 1969, this model, as Westby (2024) stated, is versatile, supporting vocabulary learning before reading (to activate prior knowledge), during reading (to monitor reading), and after students engage with a text (to assess comprehension). In this way, Frayer model prepares students with the necessary background knowledge, aids them in recognizing vocabulary usage within context during reading, and allows them to evaluate their understanding post-reading.
Frayer Model features a four-square chart with a central circle where the vocabulary word is placed. Each square surrounding the word is designated for specific content such as the definition, characteristics (distinguishing between essential and non-essential), applications, and visuals like images or drawings (Westby, 2024) .
Additional details such as examples, non-examples, usage in sentences, facts, synonyms, and antonyms can also be included depending on the focus of the lesson. This layout facilitates a comprehensive analysis and clarification of complex words, enhancing students’ vocabulary skills effectively.
Here are some practical tips on how to effectively use the Frayer Model in the classroom, drawing on strategies recommended by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction:
The Frayer Model has been shown to be particularly valuable across various educational levels and subjects. Here are some of its key benefits

Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. It generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct.
According to Cambridge dictionary, photosynthesis is “the process by which a plant uses carbon dioxide from the air, water from the ground, and the energy from the light of the sun to produce its own food and oxygen.”

PedagogyToday’s post is all about “Turn and Talk,” an engaging and interactive instructional strategy used in classrooms. If you haven’t heard about it or are looking for ways to implement it more effectively, this post is for you.
I will start with a definition of what “Turn and Talk” is all about, explaining its purpose and how it works in a classroom setting. Next, we will discuss practical tips for integrating “Turn and Talk” into your lessons, ensuring you can maximize its benefits. Then, I’ll provide some examples of “Turn and Talk” activities to inspire you and help you get started. Finally, we’ll conclude with insights from research, showcasing the proven benefits of this strategy for student learning and engagement.
“Turn and Talk” is an instructional strategy where students pair up to discuss specific topics, questions, or concepts for a set period of time (Stewart & Swanson, 2019). This approach leverages structured peer interactions to enhance understanding, retention, and engagement with the material. Through verbal articulation and reciprocal roles, students reinforce learning concepts, improve vocabulary acquisition, and develop critical social and communication skills.
Here are some practical tips to help you effectively integrate “Turn and Talk” into your classroom activities. These insights, informed by Stewart and Swansson (2019), can enhance student engagement and learning outcomes through structured peer interactions.
For inspiration, here are some examples of “Turn and Talk” activities you can use with your students to promote engagement and deepen understanding through peer discussions. These activities are designed to integrate seamlessly into various subjects and encourage collaborative learning.
The importance of “Turn and Talk” is well documented in the education literature. According to Jones et al. (2000), integrating mnemonic strategies with collaborative learning activities like “Turn and Talk” allows students to enhance their vocabulary acquisition significantly. By discussing and reinforcing learning concepts in pairs, students not only assimilate content more effectively but also retain it longer, illustrating the profound impact of collaborative learning on educational outcomes.
Further emphasizing the effectiveness of “Turn and Talk,” Vaughn and Martinez (2007) highlight how this strategy significantly improves educational outcomes for English Language Learners (ELLs) through structured, interactive, and discourse-based instruction. Their study shows that both ELLs and non-ELLs benefit from peer interactions within structured settings, which are core to the “Turn and Talk” activity. Through engaging in discussions and processing new information collaboratively, students can enhance their comprehension and mastery of content.
Locke and Fuchs’ study on peer-mediated instruction (PMI) further corroborates the benefits of structured peer interaction, akin to “Turn and Talk,” especially among students with behavioral disorders. Their research demonstrated significant improvements in both on-task behaviors and social interactions, underscoring the importance of reciprocal roles in the learning process. Through PMI, students engage in mutual teaching and learning roles, enhancing academic engagement and fostering a supportive classroom environment.

PedagogyIn today’s post, I discuss a key teaching and learning strategy known as Think-Pair-Share (TPS). More specifically, I will cover what recent research says about the effectiveness and use of TPS, delve into the key advantages of using this strategy in classroom teaching, and provide tips to help teachers seamlessly integrate TPS into their daily teaching routines.
To conclude, I’ll showcase practical examples across various subjects to demonstrate how this strategy can be applied effectively in diverse educational settings. Whether you’re a seasoned educator or new to the profession, this post aims to enrich your teaching toolkit with insights and actionable steps for implementing Think-Pair-Share.
For those of you interested in learning more about the research-based underpinnings of the Think-Pair-Share strategy, I invite you to check the references at the bottom of this post. These resources provide deeper insights and further details that can help enrich your understanding and application of this effective teaching method.
The Think-Pair-Share strategy is a popular collaborative learning method, which was introduced by Professor Frank Lyman at the University of Maryland in 1981 (Kaddoura, 2013). This technique unfolds in three key stages:
Research on the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) strategy continues to validate its effectiveness and adaptability in educational settings. According to Kaddoura (2007), TPS significantly enhances critical thinking (CT) skills along with analytical abilities like argumentation, prioritization, problem-solving, and resolution.
This aligns with earlier findings by authors like Robertson (2006) and Ledlow (2001), who advocate for TPS as an active and engaging pedagogical tool that facilitates deeper learning through cooperative interaction. These studies suggest that the structured phases of TPS encourage comprehensive thinking and interaction, which are essential for developing higher-level cognitive skills.
However, the research by Copper et al. (2021) introduces a critical examination of the ‘share’ component of TPS, revealing potential drawbacks such as inequities in student participation and heightened anxiety among students when sharing in front of large groups. Their findings underscore the necessity to reassess this phase, suggesting modifications or even elimination in certain contexts to better serve all students’ needs and minimize classroom anxieties. This perspective is crucial as it highlights the evolving understanding of how traditional methods need adaptation to ensure inclusivity and effectiveness in diverse educational settings.
While fundamentally robust, the strategy’s application and execution may require careful consideration and adjustment to address the unique challenges of contemporary classrooms. This ongoing dialogue between embracing proven methods and adapting to new educational landscapes ensures that teaching strategies like TPS remain relevant and effective in fostering not just academic skills but also a supportive and equitable learning environment.

In this section, I provide some practical examples to demonstrate how teachers can effectively incorporate the Think-Pair-Share strategy across various subjects. These examples illustrate the versatility of this method in fostering critical thinking and collaborative learning, enhancing student engagement and understanding in diverse educational contexts.
Example: When discussing civil rights movements, ask students to think about why these movements emerged when they did. Students then pair up to discuss the socio-political factors of the time and share their conclusions with the class.
Example: For a foreign language class, present a colloquial phrase or idiom. Have students think about possible meanings individually, then pair up to discuss and finally share their interpretations and correct usage with the class.
Example: Introduce a new algebraic concept like quadratic equations. Students first solve a related problem individually, discuss their solving strategies with a partner, and share their approaches and solutions with the class.
Example: In a biology lesson on ecosystems, ask students to think about the role of decomposers. Pairs discuss how ecosystems might change without decomposers and share their ideas during a class discussion.
Example: After reading a chapter of a novel, ask students to think about the motivations of a key character. They discuss their thoughts with a peer and share their interpretations with the class, enhancing understanding through collective insight.
